TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has just met the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. Luhut said that the purpose of the meeting is to remind the United States government about its promise related to energy transition investment through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).
"This is the purpose of my visit to the United States. We all remind the US again that last February, we officially launched the JETP Indonesia Secretariat," Luhut said on his official Instagram on Friday, April 14, 2023.
Indonesia as a developing country, Luhut explained, has the potential to become a model for other countries in achieving a sustainable economy as it has low emissions in the midst of the ongoing climate crisis.
With a population of more than 280 million people and as the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Luhut added that Indonesia keeps striving to improve people's welfare, including through industrialization and sustainable economic growth.
Even though industrialization is often accompanied by a hike in emissions, Luhut believed that Indonesia has sufficient resources to support sustainable economic growth. Indonesia also plays a crucial role in global decarbonization.
To accelerate the various short to long-term plans, he informed that the government is trying to partner with a number of parties so as to support a number of energy transition strategies. One of the steps is by establishing a JETP funding partnership.
Other plans to accelerate the energy transition are through the deployment of transmission lines and networks, acceleration of the development of new and renewable energy (EBT) or baseload and Variable Renewable Energy (VRE), and the increase in the value chain of EBT or EBT manufacturing in Indonesia.
“This is the path we will take to immediately realize various targets that have been set in stages and sustainably,” Luhut said.
Luhut further said that he has high hopes that his visit to the US will accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions in Indonesia and that this step can simultaneously align the growth and sustainability of the country's economy.
