TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has once again mentioned the emphasis of the Asset Forfeiture Bill (RUU Perampasan Aset) as a crucial aspect that needs to be completed soon. He claims to have pushed the House of Representatives (DPR) and state ministries to quickly resolve the issue.
“We have urged them for so long. Why has not it been completed,” Jokowi said after inaugurating the millennial housing in West Java, on April 13.
According to Jokowi, the existence of the Asset Forfeiture Law will make it easier for law enforcement officials to take action against corruption crimes. Because the President explained that the rules regarding asset confiscation are clear and already have a legal basis.
As previously reported, the Law Commission Speaker of the House, Bambang Wuryanto, said that legislators are unable to boost the passage of the Asset Confiscation Bill. The exception, said the PDIP politician, is permission from the general chairman of a political party who has a representative in the DPR RI. This was conveyed by Bambang when asked by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md about the Asset Confiscation Bill.
The pressure on members of the House to immediately pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill intensified following the emergence of a wide array of state officials who had their wealth questioned. Initially, this was unexpectedly uncovered in the case of brutal abuse committed by Mario Dandy Satriyo against a 17-year-old teenager in South Jakarta.
In Mario’s case, his father who was a tax office official had an estimated wealth reaching Rp5.6 billion, which he also legally submitted in an LHKPN. His total wealth is deemed by many to not fit his status within the tax office.
