PDIP Electability Slumps After U-20 World Cup Controversy: LSI Poll

10 April 2023 06:13 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The electability of Indonesia’s major political party PDIP experienced a nosedive right after FIFA revoked Indonesia’s status to host the U-20 World Cup, according to the latest Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) poll held from March 31 to April 4.

Several notable politicians from the Party led by Megawati Soekarnoputri were the most vocal in rejecting the participation of the Israel U-20 football team as Indonesia would have to accommodate the athletes' arrival.

LSI executive director Djayadi Hanan in his presentation on Sunday, April 9, compared the political party’s electability to previous months.

“PDIP in January 2023 still scored 22 percent and dropped to 19.3 percent and slumped to 17.7 percent in April,” he said.

Djayadi said that the opposite is seen for the Gerindra Party, which had improved its electability. In February 2023, Djayadi said Gerindra's electability scored 10.9 percent and grew to 12.8 percent in April.

The increase in electability in the last few months was also experienced by the notable opposition political party PKS. Compared to February 2023, PKS electability also tends to improve slightly from 5.4 percent to 7.6 percent.

"Other parties tend to be stable or have slightly decreased, be it Golkar, PKB, Democrats, then PPP, and PAN," said Djayadi.

Ganjar Pranowo's Electability Drops

The drop in electability after the rejection of the Israel U-10 football athletes was also experienced by Central Java Governor, Ganjar Pranowo. The electability of the PDIP member fell by 8.1 percent.

"Ganjar has decreased over the last two months, down 8.1 percent from 35 to 26.9 percent," said Djayadi.

Meanwhile, other notable politicians in Indonesia such as Anies Baswedan and Prabowo Subianto tend to strengthen or stabilize compared to the last year's survey. Prabowo’s electability increased by 3.6 percent and Anies experienced a slight increase of 1.3 percent.

According to Djayadi, the relatively small increase in the electability of Anies and Prabowo is an indication that the 8.1 percent of Ganjar's lost votes are not evenly distributed among the two. He personally assumes that the lost votes the PDIP member experienced have turned mostly into undecided votes.

The LSI survey was conducted with a random digit dialing method among 1,229 respondents aged 17 and above that were chosen through random sampling. The pollster claims to log a 2.9 percent margin of error.
