Pertamina Claims Fire on Oil Tanker Not Significantly Pollute Mataram Waters

30 March 2023 18:03 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPertamina International Shipping (PIS) stated that it is still waiting for the investigation results conducted by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) regarding the fire incident of MT Kristin ship in Mataram waters, West Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday, March 26.

The ship was a chartered vessel to transport Pertamina's fuel cargo containing Pertalite to the Integrated Terminal Ampenan and Fuel Terminal Sanggar.

Public Relations Officer of PIS, Robert Marcelino, said that the KNKT had collected data on March 28-29. “We are still waiting for the results,” he told Tempo, on Thursday, March 30.

He also claimed the company keeps monitoring the potential for oil spills in the waters, but no significant contamination was found to date. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) also visited the location from last Monday to today.

“The KLHK team took samples in the waters and checked the condition of the ship. The sample will be sent to the lab for testing. We are also still waiting for the results,” Robert added.

Pertamina International Shipping has not yet calculated potential losses due to the fire on the oil tanker. Robert said that his side is still focusing on other things, such as handling ships and cargo.

Regarding the trigger of the incident, Pertamina International Shipping initially suspected that the cause was a fire originating from the forecastle or front mooring deck. However, further investigation is still afoot.
