Megawati Meets Jokowi, Discusses 2024 Election, Puan Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairwoman of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Puan Maharani, said that the meeting between PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri and President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo last Saturday, March 18, 2023, was to discuss the upcoming 2024 General Election.

Puan explained that during the meeting, Megawati and Jokowi discussed the future of the country as the General Election draws near. Puan said that although the Election will take place later next year, the current political situation has started to heat up.

"[The meeting] discusses how the nation will move forward as the 2024 Election draws near, which is still next year, but the situation and atmosphere, it is as if it's already the tense political year," Puan said on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Jokowi mentions discussions on 2024 General Election

President Jokowi confirmed that the meeting with Megawati discusses matters related to the potential presidential candidates from the PDIP. "Yes, [the meeting] is about 2024 [Election]," Jokowi said on Monday, March 20, 2023.

However, Jokowi refused to provide further detail concerning the name of the potential candidate. Instead, the President told media crews to ask directly to Megawati.

Jokowi explained that he only provides insights based on available data. "What's certain is I only provide insights based on the numbers and data we have," Jokowi said.

PDIP has yet to determine the Presidential candidate

Currently, PDIP is yet to determine a presidential candidate to support for the 2024 General Election. The party is said to have two strong candidates, namely Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, and Puan Maharani, who is the daughter of Megawati Soekarnoputri.
