Minister Luhut Offers Condolences Over Deadly Landslide in Natuna

9 March 2023 22:08 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan on Thursday offered his condolences over the deadly landslide at the Serasan Island in Natuna, Riau Islands.

“We are deeply concerned and saddened,” said Luhut at the Batam City industrial area on March 9.

Offering his view of what could have caused such a natural disaster to take place, Luhut said the current bad weather and climate could have contributed. He called for the public to collectively look after the environment.

“Do not disrupt the environment. It is our collective responsibility and it is not exclusively the government’s,” he said.

To date, the search for landslide victims in Pangkalan Village, Serasan, Natuna is still ongoing. Data from the joint emergency response team announced that the death toll had increased to 30 people. A total of 24 people are still missing.

The landslide occurred right on a hill in Pangkalan Village, Serasan Natuna. The hill collapsed and buried the village below it. It is expected that there are 30 houses buried in the landslide.
