Indonesian Badminton Player Jonatan Christie Is Now World Number 2

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian badminton athlete Jonatan Christie overtook his compatriot, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, to become the world number two in men's singles. His rank surged following his success in securing the 2023 Indonesia Masters title in Jakarta last weekend.

Jonatan, who is familiarly called Jojo, defeated his other compatriot Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the final in two straight games 21-15, 21-13. Quoted from the official Badminton World Federation (BWF) website on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, Jonatan has collected 80,612 points, while Anthony is below him with 77,579 points.

Meanwhile, Chico with his achievement as the runner-up of the Indonesia Masters made his rank shoot up to 15th, or up by 8 from his position last week. Men's singles world number one is still Danish player Viktor Axelsen with a collection of 114,156 points.

In men's doubles, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto (Fajar / Rian) remain firm in first place with 91,455 points. Meanwhile, Indonesian veteran doubles, Hendra Setiawan / Mohammad Ahsan rank third in the world with 80,225 points.

The men's doubles champion at the Indonesia Masters 2023 Leo Rolly Carnando / Daniel Marthin rose 4 places to 13th this week. Their success in winning the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament made them collect a total of 57,627 points.

In women's doubles, the pair Apriyani Rahayu / Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti (Apriyani / Fadia) had to go down to rank eighth this week. In women's singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung settled in the same position of 14th this week. 

In mixed doubles, two Indonesian pairs, namely Rinov Rivaldy / Pitha Haningtyas Mentari and Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto / Lisa Ayu Kusumawati, also stayed in their positions after the 2023 Indonesia Masters tournament. Rinov / Pitha is ranked ninth, while Rehan / Lisa is ranked 13th in the world.
