TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo confirmed that he will attend the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship 2022 game between Indonesia and Cambodia in the preliminary round of Group A which will be held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Central Jakarta on Friday, December 23, 2022, at 16:30 hours Jakarta time.
"I'd like to watch AFF," Jokowi said.
For this year's championship, Indonesia currently sits in Group A with Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Thailand. For Cambodia, today’s match against Indonesia will be their second game. On Tuesday, Cambodia managed to beat the Philippines with a 3-2 score.
In preparation for the match, the Merah Putih national squad underwent a training camp (TC) in Bali from November 28, 2022. Because the 2022-2023 League 1 competition was halted for two months following the Kanjuruhan stadium tragedy which affected the players’ physics, the coach Shin Tae-Yong thus worked hard at the training camp for this biennial Southeast Asian soccer tournament.
"AFF Championship started yesterday [Tuesday], but for us, the first game is tomorrow [Friday]. Players have been in a training camp in Bali for almost 20 days without injury. All players are in good health," said the South Korean coach in a press conference on Thursday, December 22, 2022.
Shin Tae-Yong will bring 23 players for this AFF Championship 2022, including three naturalized players, viz. Marc Klok, Ilija Spasojevic, and Jordi Amat.
