TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Friday inaugurated two of the country’s first dry dams; the Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam, which are both located in the Bogor Regency, West Java. He believes the existence of these dams will solve one out of three major problems that persist in the capital city of Jakarta, which is flooding.
“There are only three major issues in Jakarta, the first is flooding, traffic congestion, and spatial planning,” said the President as he opened the inauguration ceremony of Ciawi Dam on December 23. “Right here is in the context of flooding. These are inaugural dry dams. Hopefully, the inundation issue in Jakarta can be overcome.”
Jokowi said the Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam are predicted to reduce flooding in 12 of Jakarta’s urban areas as the capacity of the dry dams – which costs the State Budget of Rp1.3 trillion – can reduce millions of cubic meters of water flowing from the upstream in Bogor’s Ciliwung to the downstream in Jakarta.
The Ciawi Dam, which costs Rp798.7 billion to make, takes up space up to 31.96 hectares with the main dam standing tall up to 51 meters.
This dam was first designed in the 90s and was initially scheduled to complete its construction in 2020 but was backtracked due to a myriad of issues.
