TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police Main Headquarters (Mabes Polri) responded to a statement made by the Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD regarding police personnel backing illegal mining activities. The Head of Public Communication of the National Police Headquarters Insp. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo promised that the National Police will probe for evidence and handle those who are found guilty of such crimes.
"In principle, the criminal investigation unit and regional police will follow up if pieces of evidence are uncovered," Dedi wrote in a statement on Thursday, December 15, 2022.
As previously reported on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, Mahfud MD specifically mentioned that police personnel is protecting illegal mining operations. Mahfud asserted that it would be difficult to investigate the case because of the ‘seniority ecosystem’.
"We have yet to talk about the backing they have [in protecting] a mining operation. We can't solve that yet because of the seniority that exists," said Mahfud MD during the national work meeting on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. "We must establish boundaries. What can we do to overcome this."
