TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD asserted that the revised Criminal Code (KUHP) was not passed by legislators to protect President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration. The KUHP itself will only be implemented three years from now, Mahfud explained.
Mahfud also insisted that the Criminal Code is not as some people allege it to be, which is to criminalize those who slander the President, Antaranews reported.
"The KUHP will be in effect in 2025 and is not designed to protect Jokowi," said Mahfud on Thursday, December 15, 2022. "Why is [the KUHP] being accused of protecting Jokowi and imprisoning his critics? This is meant to protect those who will run for the presidency in the upcoming election."
The coordinating minister insisted that the President does not have any issues with people who criticize or slander his leadership.
Moreover, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko asserted that the Criminal Code is not meant to accommodate the current government's agendas but rather to provide protection and legal certainty for the general public.
Moeldoko believed that the Criminal Code has wrongly been interpreted by some people, and claimed that the misinterpretations of the KUHP that have spread domestically and internationally, can be classified as hoaxes.
