TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Qatar Airways is looking forward to a significant increase in passengers in anticipation of the high number of football fans for the 2022 world cup.
"During the 2022 FIFA World Cup there were around 1,396 flights in a week," said Qatar Airways management in its official statement, Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
Meanwhile, according to the weekly Arabian Business, Qatar will welcome more than one million visitors during the football season. To cope with the inflow of football fans to the country, Qatar Airways plans to serve nearly 13,000 flights in less than a month, from 17 November to 20 December 2022.
Hamad International Airport (HIA) has undertaken a new development and shifted its operating model from hub-and-spoke to point-to-point for the arrivals service in Doha from November. HIA expansion plans, which were previously revealed in the fourth quarter of 2019, are being carried out in two phases, A and B. Phase A of the airport expansion will include connecting the North Node to the new Central Concourse, increasing the terminal's handling capacity to over 58 million passengers, and covering a total of 240,000 square meters.
Phase B of the expansion plan will further increase the airport's capacity to more than 60 million passengers annually to meet the growing demand for passenger and cargo traffic.
Qatar Airways will operate more than 150 transportation with its Middle Eastern airline partners.
The Middle Eastern airline will also provide comfort for match ticket holders to Doha with a 24-hour experience and allowance to stay in nearby cities such as Dubai or Kuwait City. They also allow fans to fly to Doha on the same day of the game and enjoy the excitement while subsequently flying back home seamlessly.
Qatar Airways will ensure to implement various strategies to maximize capacity and optimize its network to ensure that fans from around the world can enjoy its services. These strategies include increasing capacity to countries that have already qualified for the tournament and countries where football fans are likely to travel to Qatar for the event.
"In addition, the airline will redesign the network to be more agile and flexible, offering seamless connectivity for passengers around the world," said Qatar Airways Management.
