Komodo Park Tariff Hike Plan Could be Optional, Not Compulsory: Minister

1 November 2022 15:49 WIB

The COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the tourism sector, has forced the government to continue to make arrangements in the Labuan Bajo area in the hope of boosting economic growth and tourism, which is currently declining. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno in a routine press briefing on Monday mentioned the tariff increase of the Komodo National Park -- which has been postponed until January 2023 following a massive backlash earlier this year -- may likely be an option, and not compulsory.

During the postponement of the policy, Uno claimed he continues to accommodate the input from locals who rely on their livelihood from the tourism and creative economy industry around Komodo National Park.

“The point they asserted was for us to offer optional [tariff] schemes and not refer to a requirement but more of an option or voluntary-based to [help pay for] the added conservation fees,” the Minister explained.

This means that a rise in the entrance fee for Komodo National Park will not be applied to all visitors, but rather a voluntary option for tourists who intend to contribute more to conservation.

"This must be studied and disseminated, there are still two months to go, but we want the creative industry stakeholders to be sure that what is offered is a package that is in accordance with the buying power of the market," said Sandiaga Uno.

Sandiaga promised to immediately discuss Komodo Park’s management plan with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and local governments.
