Jakarta Prepares Flooding Mitigation Programs Amid Heavy Rainfall Season

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in a statement on October 9 announced a plethora of flooding mitigation programs amid a season of heavy rainfall.
The 942-DV flood control program which is the construction of 9 polder systems, 4 reservoirs, revitalization of 2 rivers, and vertical drainage will be accelerated.
The Public Works and Housing Ministry (PUPR) will also speed up the construction of the Ciawi and the Sukamahi Dams.
"The construction of the Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams, which are targeted for completion in 2022 by the PUPR will be accelerated," said BPBD in the written statement Sunday.
Sub-dept. of Water Resources in five Jakarta administration areas will also operate stationary pumps and mobile pumps, and deploy “Blue Troops” – a term referring to field personnel dedicated to handling floods – to clear clogged water lines.
BPBD will also mobilize 167 Disaster Management Officers that will be on alert in each subdistrict in Jakarta to speed up coordination and disaster management. They will also distribute facilities and infrastructure to support the city’s flooding management.
