TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued a recall for two products under Indonesian instant noodle brand Mie Sedaap on Thursday, October 6, 2022. The FSA detected ethylene oxide, a type of pesticide, in the products.
SFA has asked Sheng Sheng F&B Industries to recall Mie Sedaap's Korean Spicy Soup flavor, which expires March 17, 2023, and the Korean Spicy Chicken flavor, expiring May 21, 2023. The recall is currently ongoing.
"Ethylene oxide is a pesticide not authorized to use in food," the SFA said in a news release.
The agency asked consumers who had purchased the product not to consume it. Those who have eaten them and are concerned about their health are told to seek medical advice immediately.
On September 27, 2022, the Hong Kong Center for Food Safety tested a random sample of Mi Sedaap's Korean Spicy Chicken flavor. They found ethylene oxide in the product's seasonings and chili powder packets.
The Hong Kong government then asked Mi Sedaap Korean Spicy variant sellers to stop marketing their products and asked people not to eat them.
Wings Group, the parent company of Mie Sedaap producer Wings Food, denied using hazardous substances in its products. "Mie Sedaap makes sure there is no ethylene oxide (EtO) used and that it has met food standards, so it is safe for consumption," Wings Group Indonesia's head of corporate communications & CSR Sheila Kansil said in an official statement on September 29.
