TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Traffic Directorate of the Metro Jaya Regional Police confirmed that 30 people fell victim to a trailer truck crash accident on Jalan Sultan Agung, Bekasi, Wednesday afternoon, August 31. Ten of them died.
“The total number of victims has so far been recorded at 30. Ten victims died,” said the Police Traffic Director Senior Commissioner Latif Usman in Bekasi, Wednesday.
Most of the victims were elementary school students because the fatal collision occurred in front of State Elementary School (SDN) Kota Baru II and III West Bekasi, in addition to parents, motorcycle riders, and street food vendors.
All victims were evacuated to Ananda Hospital and Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Hospital, Bekasi City.
“The vehicles involved in the accident were an iron-laden trailer truck, two motorcycles, and a pick-up truck that was struck down by a pole,” Latif explained.
The accident started when a trailer truck loaded with iron passed from Kranji, Bekasi to Cakung, East Jakarta. Allegedly having a problem, the driver swerved to the left and hit a pole.
Latif suspected that the accident was not caused by brake failure. “Because there are braking marks. So, we estimated that it is related to speed,” he said.
