12 City World Leaders to Attend U20 Mayors Summit in Jakarta, Says Anies Baswedan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Provincial Government confirmed that 12 city leaders worldwide, or representatives of G20 country members, would attend the Urban 20 summit, or U20 Mayors Summit in Jakarta, on August 30-31. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan explained on Saturday, August 27, the importance of the meeting.
He said that the U20 Mayors Summit is a forum for exchanging thoughts and ideas to face the global challenges that are increasingly complex.
One of the challenges includes the readiness of city governments after the COVID-19 pandemic. Twelve city world leaders were scheduled to attend the U20 Mayors Summit in Jakarta physically.
The delegations are mayors of Los Angeles, Rotterdam, governor of Tokyo, mayor of Tshwane in South Africa, commissioner and administration of Mumbai, and deputy mayor of Sydney. In addition, official representatives from Berlin, Sao Paulo, Madrid, Moscow, Buenos Aires, and Istanbul.
Meanwhile, 10 delegations of city governments will attend the event virtually. They include Amsterdam, Istanbul, Izmir, Johannesburg, Lisboa, Milan, Moscow, New York, Osaka, and Rome.
Reportedly, 15 city governments acting as observers will also attend the Urban 20 forum in Jakarta. Among others, delegations from Lima in Peru and Quito in Ecuador will attend the event physically.
Meanwhile, the city government representatives as observers that will attend the U20 summit virtually are from Glasgow in Scotland and Skopje in North Macedonia.
Furthermore, Indonesian city leaders will also attend the event as observers. They are from Banjarmasin, Medan, Makassar, Padang, Palembang, Palu, Surakarta, Ambon, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, as well as representatives from Jambi and West Java.
The Urban 20 (U20) forum is part of the G20, or Group of 20 comprising 19 countries and the European Union that works to address issues related to the global economy.
U20 provides a forum for G20 cities to meet and discuss important issues to be brought to G20 Presidency.
Contributions generated from the U20 are delivered to the countries holding the G20 Presidency, including to the heads of state of G20 members, to improve the roles of cities as global economic and political leaders.
This year, Indonesia holds the G20 Presidency. The summit will be held in November 2022 in Nusa Dua, Bali.
