Indonesia Aims to Introduce Remote Surgery in 2025

30 June 2022 23:37 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Robotic surgeon from the Bandung Hasan Sadikin general hospital, Reno Rudiman, on Thursday expected that remote surgery, or telesurgery, with robotic technology in Indonesia will start as early as 2025.

“We have prepared the platform but not for the remote surgery as that will be practiced in 2024 and we aim to introduce it in 2025,” said Rudiman in a Zoom interview on Thursday, June 30, Antaranews reported.

Remote surgery is the ability of a doctor to perform surgery on a patient even though they are not physically in the same location. It is a form of telepresence. A robot surgical system generally consists of one or more arms, a master controller, and a sensory system giving feedback to the user.

He added that the movements from the robotic arms will be very accurate and precise because the surgeon's hand tremors could be absorbed thus stabilizing movements and its ergonomy could prove to be less tiring for long operations.

"Sometimes, the hands of elderly doctors tend to vibrate during smooth surgical movements. For example, for the intestines, you should not clamp them hard as they can be torn. With the help of a robot, they can adjust their grip," he added.

In addition, said Reno, this technology reduces the chance of causing tissue trauma and the risk of bleeding. The risk of infection can also be smaller.

Ergonomy Compared to Other Methods

Reno said that robotic surgery is different from laparoscopic surgery where the instruments are controlled directly in front of the patient, and the surgeon's position is often not ergonomic. Laparoscopic instrument movement is limited to only two degrees of freedom of movement.

Meanwhile in robotic surgery, said Reno, the instrument is controlled remotely, and the surgeon's position is very ergonomic and less tiring, added with flexible robotic instruments that allow seven degrees of freedom of movement.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health is currently developing the Indonesian Robotic Surgery Center at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital (RSHS) Bandung and Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta to facilitate remote surgery.
