2 Earthquakes Rock North Sulawesi, Maluku on Tuesday Morning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two strong earthquakes rocked the region of Ondong in North Sulawesi and Maluku in the early hours of 01:13 Western Indonesia TIme (WIB) on Tuesday, March 8. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.6.
The agency announced that the quake’s epicenter was pinned down to 65 kilometers southeast of Ondong and came from the depths of 32 kilometers deep.
Neighboring regions such as Manado, Siau, North Minahasa, Tondano, and Bitung reportedly felt the quake which was categorized at level II and III at the modified mercalli intensity (MMI). So far, no damages have been reported.
This comes not long after the Southwest Maluku Regency was hit by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake at 00:23 WIB, which according to the BMKG website originated 230 kilometers Northwest of Southeast Maluku. Fortunately, the agency said the series of earthquakes did not trigger tsunami warnings.
