TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta government confirmed that President Joko Jokowi Widodo planned to spend this weekend in the province.
“The regional government has today started a preparation meeting on the security from the military (TNI) and the police for the president's visit this weekend,” said Regional Secretary Kadarmanta Baskara Aji on Thursday, Feb. 24.
Aji said that, however, he was not informed yet about the agenda of the President, who will reportedly spend more than one day in the province and stay at the State Palace, Gedung Agung, which is at the end of Malioboro Street. “It is possible that the President will also see the current situation on Malioboro Street,” he added.
Jokowi has stayed in Yogyakarta several times but has not yet visited the Malioboro area that is now sterile from street vendors. They were relocated in early February to two newly-built market buildings dubbed Teras 1 and Teras 2 within the Malioboro area.
The relocation was the regional government’s measure to organize the area which is being proposed as an intangible world cultural heritage to UNESCO.
