WADA Scraps Doping Sanctions against Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) officially lifted the sanctions imposed on the Indonesian Anti-Doping Agency (LADI) which previously obtained a non-compliance status with the world anti-doping code.

“Following a circulatory vote of its Executive Committee (ExCo), WADA has removed, with immediate effect, the National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs) of Indonesia and Thailand from the list of Signatories that are non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code,” WADA announced on its official website, Thursday, Feb. 3.

The agency said both countries had fulfilled their obligations and thus the sanctions imposed were lifted.

WADA declared on October 7, 2021, that LADI failed to comply with the world anti-doping code by not meeting the annual doping test threshold. The sentence was valid for one year.

Consequently, Indonesia was prohibited from raising its national flag in international single events and multi-events, such as the Thomas Cup on October 17, 2021.

Indonesia was also barred from hosting international championships. However, with this revocation, Indonesia has regained its right to hold single and multi-events, including the 2022 ASEAN Para Games in Solo on July 20-31.

Since the sanction was imposed, Indonesia had tried to complete the requirements from WADA, including conducting a doping test that meets the annual threshold and resolving LADI administrative problems to dodge the sanctions in approximately four months.

At present, two countries that remain on WADA’s list on the non-compliance with the anti-doping code are North Korea and Russia.
