TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta mass rapid transit operator PT MRT Jakarta confirmed that the old tram tracks discovered during the construction project of MRT Phase 2 would be moved and stored. The Batavia tramway was uncovered under the TransJakarta line on Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan of West Jakarta in December 2021.
MRT Construction Director Silvia Halim said the Jakarta Culture Agency had discussed the findings. “There has been a long discussion about how we handle the findings of these tram tracks, starting from their relocation to their storage,” she said in a virtual webinar, Monday, December 27.
The tram tracks from the Dutch colonial era were found during the excavation of the Glodok-Kota MRT Phase 2A project at a depth of 15-110 centimeters from the road surface in the Glodok area. Archaeologists estimated that the tram lanes leading to the Kota train station were built around the 1800s.
Jakarta Culture Agency Head Iwan Henry Wardhana said he had assigned the Head of Protection and the Head of the Cultural Conservation Center to accompany the excavation activities carried out by MRT if they found cultural heritage objects.
“They will provide assistance to MRT Jakarta,” said Iwan. He also expressed appreciation to MRT for complying with Law No. 11 of 2020 concerning Cultural Heritage.
