TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Secretary Coordinator of Service Provider Forum for Women Victims of Violence, Venny Siregar, argued that the suicide case in Mojokerto must become the momentum for the immediate ratification of the sexual violence eradication bill (RUU TPKS). According to Siregar, RUU TPKS can guarantee legal protection for sexual assault victims.

"NWR's suicide actually rose from the desperation caused by the lack of legal certainty for sexual abuse victims," she said when contacted on Tuesday, December 7.

Besides the accleration on the ratification of the bill, improving the substance in the bill is also necessary, she went on, such as in the article about abortion.

The tragedy that befell NWR (23), a student from Mojokerto, occurred due to depression after several times experiencing sexual exploitation done by her boyfriend who was a police member, R (21). Moreover, the victim was also ordered by the perpetrator to abort her pregnancy, saying that he would marry her.

In addition to legal certainty, moral support is also important for the victims. Siregar said the role of people around the victims including families and related aid agencies is expected to reduce the burden of depression suffered by sexual violence victims.
