  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) agreed to grant amnesty for Saiful Mahdi in a plenary on Thursday, October 7, 2021. Syaiful is a lecturer at the Syiah Kuala Banda University in Aceh, who was jailed under blasphemy charges mentioned in the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE Law).

Deputy Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar led the urgent plenary and opened the meeting. "Considering the limited time and urgency and that the DPR is ahead of recess, I ask for members' agreement regarding the President's letter to the DPR. Is the President's request for amnesty approved?" Muhaimin said in the plenary.

Every member of the parliament approved the President's request and will follow up the plenary with an official letter of response to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

The President's request for Mahdi's amnesty was sent to members of the House on September 29, 2021.

Saiful Mahdi was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment with an additional IDR 10 million fine after his criticism against campus policy was met with blasphemy charges.
