TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan talked about the enormous potential value of the gaming industry in Indonesia.
“The potential value of the gaming industry in Indonesia is huge and reaches two billion dollars (Rp28.6 trillion with an assumed exchange rate of Rp14,300 per US dollar),” said Luhut at the 2021 National Coordination Meeting for Tourism and Creative Economy, Monday, September 27.
He thus called for increased support for the industry to allow them to contribute more [to the nation], particularly to spur the growth of local game products in the country. “I hope Indonesian children can create innovations in this gaming industry,” Luhut said.
The Indonesian government kicked off the Gerakan Bangga Buatan Indonesia or Proud of Indonesian Products Movement last week. The movement had created various collaborative programs in order to boost the people’s economy. As of July 2021, Luhut informed that more than 15 million Indonesian artisan MSMEs have entered e-commerce.
Based on the research results from the German statistical company, Statista, Indonesia’s online gaming industry revenue reached US$1.29 billion in 2020 and was expected to hit US$1.49 billion in 2021.
Indonesian Gaming Association chairman Cipto Adiguno also stated in January 2021 that the gaming industry grew nine percent last year in line with the advancing technology and the expansion of the internet network. “The biggest growth was evident in mobile games or applications, which grew by above 15 percent,” said Cipto.
