TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the new coronavirus is airborne, which means that car air conditioners can transmit the virus that causes Covid-19. According to an Auto2000's article issued Tuesday, June 15, the car air conditioner runs on a closed circulation system using that takes the air inside the car cabin, cools it, and releases it back.

This creates a potential for the virus to spread through air conditioning, infecting people in the car cabin.

Auto2000 listed a number of ways to clean car air conditioners to prevent virus transmission.

  1. Keeping the AC Filter Clean

Ensuring the filter is clean and working properly is vital, because if it is not functioning optimally, the dirt carried into the AC system will also be blown into the car cabin.

  1. Make sure the evaporator is clean

Evaporator pipes are prone to mold, bacteria, and viruses because these parts are damp and dirty, especially if the driver forgets to change the air conditioner cabin filter.

  1. Keep the Car Cockpit Clean

The cockpit of the car needs to be cleaned every morning, especially on the dashboard, center console, and door panels. The floor and carpet also need to be cleaned, as most of the air in the seat area is used by the car's air conditioning system.

  1. Open Windows Periodically

Ensure the car is well ventilated and has good circulation by opening the windows at least 2 to 3 minutes every hour. Some cars's AC also has its own circulation function to bring air from the outside in.

  1. Wear a Mask in the Car

To minimize the spread of the Covid-19 virus, drivers and passengers must to wear masks, especially if the passengers do not live in the same house.
