TEMPO.CO, JakartaA powerful tectonic earthquake rocked Banten in the early hours of Friday, February 26, 2021, at 02:45 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake had a magnitude of 5.1 at a depth of 40 kilometers.

Its epicenter was in the land, precisely 11 kilometers southeast of Sumur, Pandeglang. Based on the map released by the agency, the source was located near the western tip of Java Island, or Ujung Kulon National Park.

The intensity of the tremor as measured by BMKG reached scale IV of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) in the vicinity of the quake source. In other areas, such as Malingping, Labuan, Carita, Munjul, and even Sumur, the tremor was felt at scale III of the MMI.

The map showed weaker tremors spreading to Lampung and Jakarta. However, BMKG did not explain in more detail on its official website. People residing in more distant regions from the source of the earthquake, such as Bogor and Sukabumi, also claimed to feel the short yet powerful tremor.
