TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo has appointed businessman and politician Sandiaga Uno as the new minister of tourism and creative economy in place of Wishnutama Kusubandio.
The politician from the Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party was present on the verandah of the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday evening when President Widodo announced the cabinet reshuffle. He was dressed in a white shirt and blue jacket, like the other newly-appointed ministers.
"I would like to introduce Mr. Sandiaga Salahudin Uno. He was once Jakarta vice governor and now we will assign responsibilities to him to lead the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy," the President said.
Born in Rumbai Pekanbaru, Riau province, on June 28, 1969, Uno graduated from Wichita State University in the US.
He will lead the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, which is currently working to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism and creative economy sector.
He had been widely tipped for the post before the announcement of the cabinet reshuffle.
Sandiaga Uno will be inducted as the new minister of tourism and creative economy on Wednesday.
