Indonesia Needs 3,000 Personnel in Nuclear Energy Sector: Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia needs to groom almost 3,000 personnel in the nuclear science and technology field to realize the Indonesia onward goal, said Minister of Research and Technology, Bambang PS Brodjonegoro.

"Human resource development only covers engineers, nuclear scientists, nuclear technology experts, and so on," he said during a virtual symposium held to mark the anniversary of the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan) 2020 here on Wednesday.

Based on the human resource development plan 2021-2025 for the field of science and technology, Indonesia needs 2,924 graduates from magistrate and doctoral programs to groom them as excellent human resources to realize Indonesia Onward 2045, he informed.

Japan may serve as the main destination for Indonesian people to study nuclear science and technology, he said at the Indonesia-Japan Joint Symposium on Nuclear Research and Development, Safety, and Education.

To develop the competency of human resources through formal education until they obtain magistrate and doctoral degrees, the government needs to provide them with domestic and overseas scholarships, he added.

“As we know, science and technology and their usage will not materialize without quality human resources. The human resource development plan is key to achieving the government's vision and mission," he said.

The strategy for developing the capacity of human resources includes providing scholarships to study nuclear science and technology at home and abroad, he added.

Several Indonesians have also received scholarships from the Japanese government to study nuclear technology in the country, he noted.
