LIPI: Indonesian Lobsters Show Overwhelming Potential

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Center for Oceanography researcher Rianta Pratiwi in a virtual event said Indonesia’s lobster potential was extremely huge as she predicted there were at least 20 billion lobster seeds in the wild each year.
However, Rianta made it clear there were numerous factors affecting the lobsters’ preservation across Indonesia’s ocean, such as the oceanography and climatology dynamics, which greatly influenced the commodity’s supplies in the wild.
She added fishing activities and the quality of the ocean where lobsters live also posed a risk for their sustainability. “Up to this moment, there is nearly no sufficient information to pinpoint which aspects dictate the supply and existence of lobster seeds in nature,” she said.
Rianta said lobsters were commercial crustaceans in Indonesia, America’s northern and southern coasts, Africa’s mediterannien, India, Australia, New Zealand, and the Indo-Pacific waters, which include Indonesia.
Indonesia has cultivated lobsters for a lengthy period of time and this is overseen by the Maritime and Fisheries Regulation No.12/PERMEN-KP/2020 on cultivation of lobsters and crabs in Indonesian waters.
