TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States President Donald Trump has congratulated President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo for Indonesia’s 75th anniversary of independence on August 17.
In his message, Trump mentioned the “common values and deep people-to-people connections” both democratic countries share and called for achieving a “truly free and open Indo-Pacific region.” The U.S. president also talked about deepening partnerships to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19.
The complete message was issued by the U.S. Embassy Jakarta’s official website which reads:

On behalf of the United States of America, it is with great pleasure that I extend congratulations to you and the people of Indonesia on your nation’s 75th anniversary of independence on August 17.
The strategic partnership between the United States and Indonesia is rooted in common values, deep people-to-people connections, and dynamic trade and investment ties. As democratic nations, we share a commitment to advance global peace and prosperity. By working together to advance our mutual interests based on these shared democratic values, I am confident that we can achieve a truly free and open Indo-Pacific region.
During these challenging times, our joint efforts to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 will only deepen our partnership. Congratulations to you and all Indonesians on your national day and best wishes for success as you celebrate this special anniversary.
