TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo expressed his optimism that Indonesia will become a country experiencing the fastest economic recovery after China in 2021.
The forecast was based on the projections issued by several international financial institutions including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund or IMF, and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development or OECD.
“Indonesia is projected to be among groups of countries with the fastest economic recovery after China. If it is true, I think we should be grateful,” said the President when opening a limited meeting via a teleconference on Tuesday, July 28.
The IMF estimated that the global economy will grow by 5.4 percent, while the World Bank predicted 4.2 percent and the OECD said it will be around 2.8 percent to 5.2 percent.
“I assess that if those estimations are correct, our economic rank will be above the global economic development,” he said.
To make the prediction come true, Jokowi asserted that the government must keep anticipating the possibility of a second wave of COVID-19.
“We must stay vigilant, anticipate the possible occurrence of COVID-19 second wave and ongoing global economic uncertainty in 2021,” President Jokowi said.
