Police Arrest New Suspect in Alleged Slavery Aboard Long Xing 629

17 June 2020 07:13 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police (Polri) criminal investigation unit (Bareskrim) arrested Zakaria, the former director of a private company supplying Indonesian ship crews to work onboard the Long Xing 629.

“That is right, on June 12 we made an arrest on suspect ‘Z’ in relation to alleged human trafficking linked to the case involving the Long Xing 629 vessel,” said Bareskrim’s general crime directorate, Grand Commissioner John W. Hutagalung on June 16.

According to police, Zakaria was responsible for signing the deal and work agreement with four ship crews that the company helped depart to sea.

Commissioner Hutagalung said Zakaria will be charged in violation of Article 4 of Law No.21/2007 that oversees the eradication of human trafficking. Prior to Zakaria, police had already named three people as suspects in this case.

The case involving the Long Xing 629 vessel saw three Indonesian sailors die after they were allegedly forced to work under situations that closely mimics modern slavery. The Chinese vessel’s crew buried their bodies at sea, which grabbed the public’s attention months prior after a video of the incident went viral.
