TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto has dispatched a special team to Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta following the possible spread of anthrax in the area.
“My team has been dispatched to the area immediately. We do suspect the spore-bacteria is in the region. My director-general is also there to conduct a thorough check,” said Terawan at the Jakarta Presidential Palace Complex on Thursday, January 16.
He also said that the ministry will try to supply enough antibiotics for those who are infected. He said that it may have possibly spread from consuming beef from cattle that were infected. “They were infected after consuming beef from cattle that suddenly died.”
However, Minister Terawan does not know the exact number of people infected by the disease. He also warned about the Wuhan flu from a pneumonia outbreak in China which has started to spread to Japan.
Previously on January 15, 2020, state news agency Antara reported 27 people in the subdistricts of Gunungkidul had been tested to be positively infected by anthrax.
