TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah's interbank currency in Jakarta managed to stay below Rp14.000 per US dollar. On Wednesday's trade, December 18, the rupiah closed up 9bps or 0.06 percent to trade for Rp13,988 per US dollar.
Garuda Berjangka director Ibrahim Assuaibi said the market responded positively towards November's trade balance data, which showed a US$1.33 billion deficit. The deficit was far less than last year's US$8.5 billion.
"The deficit from January to November 2019 is only US$3 billion," Ibrahim said in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia's median rate showed the rupiah climbing to Rp14,007 per dollar today after closing yesterday at Rp14,018.
Ibrahim the US-China phase-one deal announced last week contributed to the rupiah's gain today. Donald Trump plans to lower the US tariff on China's goods as a "reward" for China's increased purchase of US products.
