Thousands of Indonesian Inmates Receive Christmas Remission

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - This year’s Christmas bliss came upon 11,232 inmates that received reduced prison sentences under the 2018 Christmas remission.
As many as 160 Christian inmates that underwent a minimum of six months imprisonment among other criteria received an immediate release having their sentence reduced by the remission.

Director General of Correctional Services Sri Puguh Budi Utami stated that other criteria an inmate must adhere to in order to receive a reduced sentence are by having a positive record throughout their imprisonment and have participated in development programs held by the correctional institute.
Other than to motivate inmates, the Christmas remission is also meant to reduce the budget spent to maintain prison inmates and prevent overpopulation. According to Sri Puguh, this year’s remission contributed to a budget efficiency of Rp 4,759,051.500.
Law and Human Rights Minister Yassona H. Laoly explained that remission programs are also meant to give hope and reward inmates that continue to improve themselves. “Because the quicker they improve their behavior the quicker they will be able to reintegrate with the general society,” said Minister Yassona.
