TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Directorate General of Immigration Office has imposed three sanctions against the US journalist William Nessed as he is proved to have violated immigration regulations.
Immigration Office spokesperson, Ade Dahlan, said on Monday (4/8) that the office has decided to revoke Nessens temporary stay permit, to deport him and to ban him from visiting Indonesia for one year.
Nessen, who left Indonesia on Monday afternoon, was charged with violating immigration regulations because the freelance reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle had carried out journalism activities in Aceh.
He had even lived in the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) headquarters in North Aceh.
Last week, Banda Aceh District Court sentenced Nessen to 40 days imprisonment but he was released the same day as he had already spent 40 days in jail.
Ade said Nessens temporary stay permit that will expire on October 23 was revoked because he had misused this.
Nessen was issued the permit for journalism activities and was charged of misusing it to send provocative reports to many international media.
Regarding with the decision to ban Nessen from entering Indonesia for one year, Ade said, After one year, it will be reviewed.
If Nessen is cooperative, he could be permitted to enter Indonesia again.
