TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The peak of Mount Semeru, which is often referred to as the peak of the gods, is covered by a circular cloud resembling a hat.

The head of Data Information Center and National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said the phenomenon occurred because the mountain peak was covered by altocumulus lenticularis cloud. It was formed because of turbulence or whirlwind on the mountaintop.

“[The turbulence] formed the cloud, so it looks like the mount wears a hat,” Sutopo said on his Instagram post @sutopopurwo.

Sutopo said the phenomenon was normal and had occurred at other mountain peaks. It depends on the dynamics of the local atmosphere.

“There is no need to be associated with mystical things, disasters, or political events,” he said.

Sutopo warned that turbulence at the top of the mountain indicates a whirlwind of strong winds. It is dangerous for climbers because it causes extreme cold temperatures.

The BNPB chief joked that the phenomenon was more suitable as a background for taking pre-wedding photos. He considered that taking pictures with that Mount Semeru as the background is more beautiful than a wedding photo in a bush.
