Study Says Indonesians Use Smartphones to be Entertained

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A latest research conducted by UC News Lab together with Cheetab Global Lab suggests that Indonesians use smartphones mainly to consume digital contents in the entertainment sector.


According to the research that was done from September 10 – September 16, 2018, Indonesia’s smartphone users would spend an average time of 1.2 hours each day in search for entertainment-related digital contents.


Their report also states that the average penetration of entertainment applications in Indonesia reached 81.45 percent, which includes sports. Meanwhile, the consumption of contents with entertainment values was 23.07 percent.


UC News Lab also reported that the majority of smartphone users in Indonesia tend to access articles with images rather than the ones with videos since Indonesia’s internet still lacks the speed compared to other countries. In average, contents with text and images are more popular (84 percent) compared to a page with videos (15 percent).


Breaking the data down shows that entertainment-related apps with videos (72.18 percent) followed by music with 27.19 percent, news with 12.72 percent, and sports with 1.12 percent. Another less enthusiastic segment is live streaming contents with 1.38 percent.


Sports related contents scored 23.03 percent, while politics generated 9.39 percent, social (8.86 percent), comedy (7.8 percent), while scoring the least favorite according to UC News Lab is technology-related contents with 2.02 percent.
