TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Coffee Day was first celebrated officially by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in Milan, Italia, on the first October of 2015, as quoted from a website Internationalcoffeeday.org.


The International Coffee Day was set to unite coffee celebration considering each country has different national coffee day, for example, Brazil on May 24 and the United States on September 29, while Indonesia on March 11.


To celebrate the International Coffee Day, Tempo outlined five health benefits of coffee.


1. Reduce the risk of 2-type diabetes



Based on the study conducted by the alumni of Harvard University, regularly drinking coffee can reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes by 9 percent. Coffee is rich in minerals such as magnesium and chromium to help the body use insulin that controls glucose in the body.


2. Prevent liver disease



A study by the alumni of Medical School revealed that three to four cups of coffee a day is good for your health as it has protective substances that reduce cirrhosis and prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

3. Help to lose weight



Black or green coffee without sugar in your daily meal will help you lose weight. The chlorogenic acid contained in coffee can control the glucose in the body thus your body metabolism enhances that lead to weight loss, as long as it is combined with a balanced diet and adequate physical activity, Dr. Rupali Datta, Chief Clinical Dietician at Fortis-Escorts Hospital in New Delhi explained.


4. Control hunger levels



The caffeinated beverage is effective to improve the metabolism and add you more energy. Therefore, it will suppress your hunger levels. However, make sure to have plain coffee without sugar or cream.


5. Reduce the risk of heart failure



Coffee is linked to the heart health. People who regularly drink coffee have a lower risk of heart rhythm disturbances and heart failure.
