TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo said that the government will comply with the Supreme Court`s (MA) ruling on the lawsuit against the General Election Commission Regulation (PKPU) No. 20/2018 regarding the permit of former corruptors as legislative candidates in 2019 election.

“We'll comply with MA,” said Tjahjo in Jakarta, Friday, September 14.

Previously, KPU issued a regulation (PKPU) saying that former convicts of drug crimes, children sexual abuse criminals, and corruption crimes are barred to become legislative candidates.

The government, the House (DPR) officials, the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) and the General Election Commission (KPU) have agreed to respect the PKPU. But a lawsuit against it was submitted and the government waited for the MA's verdict.

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, September 13, that former corruption convicts may register themselves as legislative candidates. MA spokesman Suhadi explained the lawsuit was granted since it was in contrary with the higher law.

"They may enroll in the legislative candidacy [in the 2019 election] so long they comply with the law and regulation," he said
