Kominfo Cracks Down on Non-certified Jammers Sold on E-commerce

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) is set to crack down on the sales of radio frequency jammers that have been sold on many e-commerce sites. The government deemed the equipment can easily be misused for illegal purposes.
“Many communication signal jammers are freely sold in e-commerce sites without us ever knowing if the items are certified or not,” said Irawati Tjipto, the Ministry’s resources and postal and information equipment directorate (SDPPI) on Friday, August 24.
Irawati explained that banning the sales of such items are regulated under Law No.36/1999 on telecommunication, article 22 and 38. The exception is only for state issues such as the security of the president.
“It’s not just Indonesia that bans the sales of jammers, but a developed country such as the United States of America has also banned its sales except if it’s used for homeland security issues,” she said.
She further revealed that 2018 alone saw 67 percent of certified communication equipment being sold in e-commerce areas, the rest of the percentage are non-certified. She plans on summoning the sellers to hand out official warnings before applying state Laws to legally incriminate people who sell uncertified jammers.
