Government Destroyed 488 Illegal Fishing Boats since 2014

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti announced that the government had destroyed 488 illegal fishing boats throughout 2014 - 2018.


“The total boats sunken from 2014 amounted to 488 illegal fishing boats,” said Susi today on August 21.


As of yesterday, the Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Ministry sank 125 illegal boats simultaneously in 11 locations across Indonesia. The boats that were destroyed were mostly involved in illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities.

According to Minister Susi, she personally led the sinking of 15 ships in Bitung, North Sulawesi. Other than that, there were 40 boats destroyed in Natuna, 23 in Tarempat Anambas, 18 in Pontianak, 9 in Batam, 6 in Cirebon, 3 in Aceh, 2 in Tarakan, one in Ambon, and one in Merauke.


Minister Susi explained that the destroyed boats were collected from numerous cases that have gone through a legal process. She maintains that this punishment aims to give a deterrent effect on other illegal fishers upon entering Indonesian waters.
