Minister Retno Becomes First Runner for Asian Games Torch Relay

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi became the first participant to take on the 2018 Asian Games torch relay in Yogyakarta this morning.
The Asian Games torch was handed by Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X to Minister Retno and was alternately handed to Yogyakarta Police Chief Brigadier General Ahmad Dofiri. The torch was then passed on to several other appointed participants.

The Asian Games torch relay kicked off at the Yogyakarta Palace Yard and traveled 11.5 kilometers to the Yogyakarta Monument that was set as the finish line.
Based on Tempo’s observation, the torch from New Delhi was combined with the fire from the Mrapen eternal fire on Wednesday, July 18, and was kept overnight at the Palace front ward.

Thousands of students holding Indonesian flags lined up at the north square while the public street in front of the Keraton up to the zero-kilometer point was closed.
INASGOC Secretary General Eris Heriyanto said that the Asian Games torch relay opener at Yogyakarta Palace became the official sign of the torch’s journey across 53 Indonesian cities for one whole month.
