Bawaslu Ready to Supervise Ministers' Run for House Seats

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bawaslu chairman Abhan said the Election Supervisory Agency is ready to watch for potential power abuse by ministers planning to run as legislators.


"For the case of power abuse, we are authorized to conduct supervision," Abhan said here on Wednesday, July 18.

Abhan said that Law no. 7/2017 on the General Elections does not mandate ministers to step down from their posts when running for a seat at the House. However, the ministers must be on duty leave during the campaign period.

For the 2019 Elections, the campaign period for candidates of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and the Regional Representative Council (DPRD) is scheduled to take place from September 23 to April 13 2019.


A number of cabinet ministers have officially registered as candidates for legislative members to the KPU yesterday. Among them are Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani, and Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin.
