TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government is eyeing to introduce the Kelapa Gading-Velodrome light rail transit (LRT) as a fully operable means of transportation for the 2018 Asian Games.

Eight sets of Hyundai Rotem LRT units that consist of 16 train wagons have been shipped from South Korea to Jakarta several days earlier. The wagons are currently under rigorous testing before it is introduced to the public.

Here are five interesting facts regarding the Jakarta LRT project:

1. Quickest production

Project manager Jakpro chose Hyundai Rotem through a tender contract and requested that the factory meet the tight deadline of at least 15 months. From numerous countries that participated in the tendering such as France, Spain, and China, only South Korea was willing to undergo the swift production schedule and managed to complete 16 train wagons in 13 months.

2. Millions of Dollars-worth budget

The allocated rolling-stock budget for 16 carriages reached USD320 million, which already includes the LRT’s spare parts, maintenance costs, and many more variables. This would make one wagon to be valued at USD20 million or Rp289 billion.

3. Modern minimalist

The interior of the Jakarta LRT rolling stock exudes a modern yet minimalist-vibe based on the white paint covering the walls of the train and stainless steel seats. Design cues such as these are similar to the train units in operation at developed countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Europe.

4. 240 passengers

Unlike the city’s MRT and commuter line, Jakarta’s LRT only accommodates 40 seats for each wagon. Meanwhile, the rolling stock is able to accommodate 230 passengers while standing and can accommodate 270 passengers at the very most.

5. A state symbol

The exterior of Jakarta’s LRT units are dominated by a distinctive red and white that represents the country’s national flag complete with a golden color cues that resemble a wing in some parts which is said to be inspired by the state symbol Garuda Indonesia.
