TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The two children of former president Soeharto, Hutomo Mandala Putra or Tommy Soeharto, and Siti Hediati Haryadi or Titiek Soeharto, gathered at the memorial museum of their father in Yogyakarta today, June 11.

Their attendance was part of Berkarya Party's agenda to hold a meeting regarding the party's consolidation and political statements ahead of the 2019 presidential elections.

Tommy is the chairman of Berkarya Party, while his older sister Titiek is known as a Golkar Party official.

However, during his speech before thousands of Berkarya Party cadres, Titiek said that her presence was to confirm that she is no longer a member of Golkar Party.

"I have decided to leave Golkar and fight for the people's aspirations through Berkarya Party," she said in her speech, after which Tommy gave her a card symbolizing her membership in the party.

Titiek said she left Golkar because she felt she couldn’t do much for the nation whilst staying in the party, which is a coalition and friend of the current government.

"I was sad because I want to speak for the people, but since I was a member of a party that supports the government—I couldn’t," she remarked.

Titiek added that she hopes "Golkar can provide inputs for the government to improve the nation, rather than just follow what the president wants."
