TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi will open a meeting of the High-Level Consultation of World Muslims Scholars on Wasatiyyat Islam (HLC-WMS) at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Tuesday, May 1.

The President's Special Envoy for Dialogue and Cooperation of Interfaith and Civilization, Din Syamsudin, said the meeting will discuss the conception and implementation of the Wasatiyyat Islam.

Din, who works with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is the initiator of the event.

He explained, Wasatiyyat Islam means the middle way of Islam. According to Din, it is an Islamic insight that upholds balance, full of tolerance, takes the middle ground, and tends to solve problems by deliberation.

Din said about 100 ulema and Muslim scholars will attend the Wasatiyyat Islam. A total of 50 figures come from abroad and 50 figures from within the country.

He mentioned one of the Islamic leaders who would attend the event was Al-Azhar Great Sheikh Ahmad Muhammad Ath-Thayeb. The Al Azhar shaikh met with President Joko Widodo yesterday at State Palace in Jakarta.

In the meeting, President Jokowi and Ahmad Muhammad Ath-Thayeb discussed a collaborative effort to broadcast the Wasatiyyat Islam. According to Din, Ahmad appreciated the application of Wasatiyyat Islam in Indonesia.
