TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State power company PLN kicks off the operation of the first biomass power plant in Kalimantan on Tuesday, April 24. The power plant runs on farming waste, generating 15 MW of electricity.

The power plant belongs to independent power producer PT Rezeki Perkasa Sejahtera Lestari. It is expected to supply 74 million kWh of electricity per year.

"This biomass power plant will strengthen electricity supply in the equator line area and replace the use of several oil-fueled power plants," PLN West Kaalimantan general manager said on Tuesday.

According to Richard, the development of new renewable energy is one of PLN's priorities in Kalimantan.

"In West Kalimantan today, 44 percent of power plants are stll running on oil fuel," he said.

The Rezeki Siantan Biomass Power Plant 1 began construction in December 2016. It is located in Wajok Hulu, Mempawah Regency.

Rezeki Perkasa Sejahtera Lestari president director Duken Kuncara said the company invested more than US$21 million to build the power plant.
