TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The broken underwater optic cable owned by state telecom company Telkom in Papua affected 600,000 Telkomsel customers in accessing data service.

Telkom cable optic was cut off at 363,67 km point away from Jayapura on April 6 due to an earthquake in Sarmi waters. To recover the incident, Telkom has activated backup network Radio IP and satellite with a capacity of 1,600 MBps and 266 MBps, respectively.

General Manager Sales of Telkomsel regional Maluku and Papua, Ismu Widodo stated Monday that the operator company has prepared some compensations for all customers for the inconvenience.

“Telkomsel will give free data package for the prepaid customers, as for the postpaid customers, the bonus will be given in the bill payment next month,” Ismu said.

Ismu claimed the voice and short message service could be used as usual, but Telkomsel has yet provided data service in maximal since the data service using both backup networks is limited compared to cable optic usage.

However, Ismu further ensured he will expand the capacity of the backup networks gradually. In the meantime, Telkomsel prioritized the network recovery in the center areas and city.
